Two Percent of Bank Transaction Revenue Allocated to ‘FATA Police’

The Islamic Consultative Assembly approved that two percent of revenue generated from transactions in Iran’s banking system be allocated to ‘FATA Police,’ which is responsible for overseeing the internet and cyberspace.

Based on the Islamic Consultative Assembly’s decision on Monday, March 7, all banks and credit institutions were obligated to transfer two percent of revenue derived from electronic banking system transactions to the country’s general treasury, with 100 percent of this budget to be spent on strengthening law enforcement’s ‘Information Production and Exchange Space’ unit.

This comes as the Assembly continues to draft the ‘Protection of Cyberspace Users’ bill, a legislation described as one of the main demands of Iran’s Supreme Leader.

On Friday, Morteza Aghataherani, head of the Cultural Commission of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, said that ‘explanation’ in the field of cyberspace is ‘very weak’ and ‘various enemies want cyberspace in Iran to be completely unregulated so they can implement their plans in this domain.’

Monitoring cyberspace and dealing with what is called ‘moral crimes,’ ‘abnormalities,’ and ‘violations’ are among the activities of FATA Police.

The launch of virtual stores on various social media platforms, including Instagram, has become one of the ways people earn income, and controlling such transactions could be considered one of the objectives of increasing the financial resources of the ‘Information Production and Exchange Space’ police unit.
