Two-Week Strike of Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Factory Workers Ends Following Negotiations with Management

Following management’s agreement to some of the workers’ demands at Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Company, the two-week strike by workers has ended.

Iran Labor News Agency, ILNA, reported on Sunday, September 11, that following labor union negotiations held on Friday and Saturday at the Khuzestan Governorate and the Shush County Labor Department, the labor protest at Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Company ended after nearly 14 days, and workers returned to work.

On Saturday, several news outlets reported, citing the Haft Tappeh Company workers’ union, that following a meeting between members of the Haft Tappeh workers’ representatives assembly with the Khuzestan Deputy Governor and management in Ahvaz, management agreed to some of the workers’ demands.

Accordingly, it was decided that from now on, contract regulations with workers would be arranged in the presence of representatives from the Cooperative, Labor and Social Welfare Organization and under the supervision of worker representatives in accordance with regulations.

It was also agreed that the implementation of the job classification plan would be placed on the agenda after legal grounds are prepared, and management announced it would not oppose the implementation of this plan and any other legal measures. Additionally, it was agreed that overdue workers’ wages would be paid by Wednesday, September 14.

Workers at Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Company have faced issues with delayed salaries and other labor problems for years, and in recent years have repeatedly held gatherings and strikes in protest of the delay in their claims.

Following its privatization in 2015, Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Company faced difficulties and mostly paid workers’ wages with delays. According to ILNA, in the recent protests, workers stated they are owed at least three months of wages.
