Two-Year Prison Sentence for Physician Convicted of Writing About ‘Shah’ and Calling Islamic Republic ‘Criminal’

“Iman Dastyar,” a physician from Yasuj, was sentenced to two years imprisonment for writing about the “Shah” and referring to the Islamic Republic as a “criminal.”

“Iman Dastyar,” a physician from Yasuj, was convicted of “spreading falsehoods with intent to disturb public opinion” due to posts on his Instagram account and sentenced to two years imprisonment and a ban on leaving the country. The sentence was issued by Branch 110 of Yasuj Criminal Court 2. According to judicial authorities, the content published by this young physician was found to be “contrary to facts and false” and “intended to disturb public opinion.”

The statements published on Iman Dastyar’s Instagram page and included in the court verdict include: “Participating in elections means the continuation of murderers’ presence,” “Tomorrow the voice of the Shah will be broadcast on television,” and addressing the Islamic Republic as a “criminal and violator of rights.” All of these were cited under the headings of “disturbing public opinion” and “inciting public hatred and resentment toward the government.”

The sentence issued by Branch 110 of Yasuj Criminal Court 2 against Iman Dastyar imposes two years of disciplinary imprisonment as the primary punishment and a ban on leaving the country for 18 months as a supplementary punishment. However, the court ruled that “considering the defendant’s youth and lack of effective prior criminal convictions,” the sentence would be suspended for two years. The verdict can be appealed to the Court of Appeals of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province within 20 days of notification.

Additionally, the court stated in its ruling that the language used by Iman Dastyar exceeded the bounds and limits of citizens’ right to criticize the government.
