Uncertainty Over Fate of ‘Aida Najafloo,’ Christian Citizen in Evin Prison

“Aida Najafloo,” a Christian citizen, continues to languish in Evin Prison in an uncertain legal status four months after her detention.

Aida Najafloo, a Christian citizen, was detained by security forces in mid-Bahman of last year and transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison, which is under the supervision of the Ministry of Intelligence. She was transferred to the women’s ward of Evin Prison on April 14, 2025 (24 Farvardin 1404).

Aida is the mother of two children, one of whom is ill, and in her absence, the family faces doubled pressure, and caring for her sick child has encountered very serious challenges. Prior to her detention by Ministry of Intelligence officials, Aida underwent lumbar disc surgery and, due to spinal column problems, requires regular medical care.

During her detention, she has not only been deprived of necessary medical services, but this deprivation has exacerbated pain and caused further physical damage to her spinal column.

For Aida Najafloo’s temporary release, an extremely high bail of 11 billion tomans has been set, which her family is unable to pay. This has resulted in her remaining imprisoned, while as of the time of this report, no official information has been released regarding the reason for her detention or the charges against her.

The detention of this Christian mother occurred despite Christianity being officially recognized in the Iranian regime’s constitution; however, security agencies regard Muslims converting to Christianity with particular sensitivity and subject them to severe security and legal measures.

While according to Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 18 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, every person has the right to freedom of thought, conscience, religion, and the right to change religion and express it both individually and collectively, and the Islamic Republic is a signatory to these articles, it has in practice acted contrary to what it has committed to and signed.

Many Christians are imprisoned, and their families are also under pressure and security oppression, yet no information about their detention has been released and remains concealed, while their families are threatened repeatedly by state institutions.
