Unprecedented Women’s March in Herat Against Taliban Policies

Zabihullah Mujahid, Taliban spokesperson, announced that there will be no female ministers in the composition of Afghanistan’s new government. A number of women in Herat protested against this policy and expressed their concerns about Taliban rule.

The Taliban announced that the composition of the new government of this country will be introduced on Friday, August 3rd (12th of Shahrivar). While speculation continues about what the Taliban calls the “national unity government,” the Taliban spokesperson announced that there will be no female minister in the future Afghan government.

Zabihullah Mujahid stated that Taliban leaders have no objection to women’s education and women can work as assistants in various centers, but they will not be granted any important positions or ranks.

France Press Agency reported on Thursday, September 2nd (11th of Shahrivar) about the holding of women’s demonstrations in Herat. Women, holding protest placards, called on the Taliban government to reconsider the exclusion of women from important responsibilities.

Participants in these demonstrations, carrying slogans such as “Education, work, security are our natural rights” and “No government can survive without women’s support,” demanded their social and political presence in Afghanistan.

France Press Agency reported the number of participants in these demonstrations as 50 people and referred to it as an unprecedented political action in Afghanistan.

Bassira Taheri, one of the organizers of this protest movement, said that women have held important responsibilities in Afghanistan over the past 20 years, and therefore, their exclusion means eliminating the capacity and capabilities of a part of society.
