US Future National Security Advisor Reacts to Zam’s Execution

Jake Sullivan, Joe Biden’s pick for US National Security Advisor, condemned the execution of Rouhollah Zam and emphasized that the United States, alongside its allies, will stand against human rights violations in Iran.

Jake Sullivan, the incoming National Security Advisor of the United States under President-elect Joe Biden, described the execution of Rouhollah Zam as a “reprehensible violation of human rights” by the Islamic Republic and stressed that the United States will stand with its allies against human rights abuses in Iran.

Sullivan wrote on his personal Twitter account Sunday evening, December 13 (23 Azar): “The execution of Rouhollah Zam, a journalist denied due process and convicted for exercising his universal rights, is yet another horrific case of human rights violation by the Iranian regime.”

The execution of Rouhollah Zam has sparked severe international reactions. The EU-Iran economic meeting scheduled to begin Sunday (23 Azar) in Tehran was cancelled following Zam’s execution.

France’s Foreign Ministry announced that its ambassador, along with the ambassadors of Germany, Austria, and Italy, would not attend the meeting. One of the editors of The Guardian newspaper, who was scheduled to chair one of the meeting’s sessions, called Zam’s execution “abhorrent” and said he would refrain from participating in the EU-Iran economic meeting.

Jake Sullivan further emphasized in his tweet that the United States, together with its allies, will “stand firm against human rights violations in Iran and will not remain silent.”

Democratic Senator Chris Coons from Delaware also reacted to Rouhollah Zam’s execution on his personal Twitter account, writing that the Iranian government, by executing Zam, “once again demonstrated its callousness and disregard for human rights.” He emphasized “condemnation of such barbaric acts” and wrote: “We must make greater efforts to protect freedom of speech, media, and protests [in Iran].”

Rouhollah Zam, who was residing in France, was arrested in September of the previous year following a trip to Iraq and transferred to Iran. The 15th Branch of the Islamic Revolution Court in Tehran convicted him of 13 charges in June of the current year, deeming them as “instances of corruption on earth,” and issued a death sentence. The sentence was also upheld by the Supreme Court and was carried out early Saturday morning on December 13 (22 Azar).
