US State Department Report on Iran Human Rights Sanctions

The US State Department published a report on Wednesday evening that it had sent to Congress regarding American sanctions against individuals involved in human rights violations in Iran.

In this report, whose text was published on the US State Department website, reference is made to recent sanctions against Iran’s prison organization in Tehran and Sohrab Soleimani, its former head.

The Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs stated in this report: “As we carefully examine Iran’s compliance with the JCPOA and develop a comprehensive Iran policy, we hold Iran accountable for human rights violations through new actions.”

Stuart Jones further stated that he wants partners around the world to join the United States in this path and warn individuals and institutions that violate international sanctions against Iran in the field of human rights.

Referring to the fact that the Iranian government has trampled on the rights of its own people and nationals of other countries in multiple instances over the past few decades, he said this pattern of behavior by the Islamic Republic must end.

According to Mr. Jones, the United States and its allies will continue to pressure Tehran to defend the rights of the Iranian people and foreign nationals in Iran, including American citizens who have been wrongfully imprisoned or gone missing.

At the end of this report, reference is also made to the actions taken by the Treasury Department of President Trump’s administration last month to sanction certain individuals involved in human rights violations in Iran.

The State Department report is being released simultaneously with a Wednesday statement from the Treasury Department regarding sanctions against seven others in Iran and China who have aided Iran’s ballistic missile program.

The publication of the State Department report and Treasury Department statement comes as the US government extended the suspension of Iran’s nuclear sanctions on Wednesday in accordance with implementing the JCPOA and verifying Iran’s compliance with it by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
