On Thursday night, the 28th of Esfand, three sisters, a grandmother, and the fiancé of one of these girls in Kangan County located in Bushehr Province were murdered by their cousin. It is said that these murders were committed under the pretext of the type of clothing and lifestyle of the girls in this family.

According to Hrana News Agency, the news organ of the Human Rights Activists in Iran collective, on Thursday night, the 28th of Esfand 1399, three sisters, a grandmother, and the fiancé of one of these girls in Kangan County located in Bushehr Province were murdered by their cousin.

These girls who were 14, 18, and 21 years old, along with their 75-year-old grandmother and the 21-year-old fiancé of one of the girls who was present in the family home at the time of the murders, have been killed.

Local sources in conversation with Hrana confirmed that the motive for the murder, according to the suspect’s previous statements on social media, was the type of clothing of these girls and their relationships, and the suspect had claimed in his statements that he had previously warned the girls about this matter.

Ali Hassan Pour, the General and Revolutionary Prosecutor of Bushehr Province, confirmed this morning the murder of these 5 citizens and attributed the suspect’s motive to dissatisfaction with the behavior and conduct of this family.

Honor crimes or honor killings refer to acts of violence and often the murder of women in a family by their male relatives.

These women are punished for “shaming their family’s honor.” This shame encompasses various matters, including refusal to enter forced marriage, being a victim of sexual assault, getting divorced (even from an unworthy husband), having a relationship with the opposite sex, or committing adultery. For a person to become a victim of honor crimes, it is sufficient merely to be suspected of having damaged the family’s reputation.

In Iranian laws, provisions have been considered to exempt individuals who commit “honor killings” from severe punishments.
