Atena Daemi sentenced to "another two years and one month in prison"

The father of Atena Daemi, a civil activist who is currently in prison, announced on Wednesday, October 8, that his son had been re-convicted.

Hossein Daemi wrote on his Twitter page that Atena has been sentenced to "another two years and one month in prison," with less than a year left before her sentence and release.

It is unclear what charges Atena Daemi's new case involves. Ms. Daemi, an activist against the death penalty, has been sentenced to five years in prison on charges including "propaganda against the system," "gathering and colluding against national security," and "insulting the leadership."

He was first arrested in October 2014, which lasted 16 months. Then, in December 2016, he was transferred to Evin Prison to serve his sentence, and has been in prison since then.

In a letter recently published on the HRANA website on the occasion of the "International Day Against the Death Penalty," this civil activist stated that he "is not affiliated with any political movement" and "is only in prison because he opposes executions, retribution, and violence, and insists on human rights."

In this letter, he also emphasized the need for people to "unite and join hands" to fight forms of violence in society, including the death penalty.
