Atena Farghadani released from prison

Atena Farghdani, an Iranian cartoonist who was imprisoned in connection with a cartoon protesting a parliamentary bill that would have limited birth control and women's rights in Iran, was released from Evin Prison today, Tuesday, May 4.
Last week, Mohammad Moghimi, Ms. Farghadani's lawyer, announced that his client's sentence had been appealed.
According to Ms. Farghdani's lawyer, the appeals court reduced Ms. Farghdani's sentence of 9 years and 9 months in prison to 18 months.
The International Cartoonists' Rights Defense Network presented Ms. Farghadani with the Courage Award last August.
Atena Farghdani was arrested in September 2014 and released on bail two months later.
After his temporary release, he told the website JERS that the main focus of his interrogations was on his paintings, his relationship with the families of the victims of the 2009 protests, and the Baha'is of Iran.
The cartoonist released a video at the same time, announcing that he had been "disrespected" in prison.
In January 2014, he presented himself to Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, was transferred to Qarchak Prison in Varamin, and after two months was sent to Evin Prison.
