US stops supporting Yemen war

Al Jazeera reported that the US President has ordered a halt to support for military operations in Yemen. In addition, Joe Biden is set to name a new special envoy for Yemen to “be more proactive” in resolving the conflict in the country.

The White House national security adviser announced that the United States will end its support for combat operations in Yemen.

According to the German news agency, Jake Sullivan said at a press conference on Thursday, February 4, that new US President Joe Biden wants to introduce a new special envoy for Yemen to play a "more active and committed" role in resolving the Yemeni conflict.

Biden will introduce the new special envoy on Thursday during a meeting at the US State Department.

The United States has been supporting the Saudi-led coalition's military operation in Yemen targeting the Iran-backed Houthi militias. The coalition has repeatedly carried out airstrikes in Yemen, which have also resulted in the deaths of numerous civilians.

The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen supports the country's internationally recognized government against the Houthis.

The United Nations has repeatedly warned that Yemen is on the brink of famine, to the point where hundreds of thousands of people in the country could lose their lives.

According to the organization, the emergency situation for the Yemeni people became more difficult when former US President Donald Trump placed the Houthi militias on the country's terrorist list.

Biden is set to revisit this issue in the near future.
