German Chancellor Calls Russian Attack on Ukraine a ‘Dark Day for Europe’

Representatives of 30 NATO member states are holding an emergency meeting regarding the Russian attack on Ukraine. Scholz spoke of a “dark day” for Europe. The United States, Britain, and Canada strongly condemned Russia and warned of serious consequences of the attack.

An emergency meeting of foreign ministers from NATO member states began Thursday morning, March 5th (February 24th) in Brussels. Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General, condemned the Russian attack on Ukraine, calling it “reckless and a blatant violation of international law.” Stoltenberg wrote on Twitter that this attack threatens the security of Europe.

Joe Biden, President of the United States, in a conversation with Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, condemned the Russian attack on Ukraine as “unjustified and unprovoked” and said he has informed Zelensky of planned U.S. and allied actions against Russia, including “severe sanctions.”

Olaf Scholz, Chancellor of Germany, spoke of a “dark and terrible day for Europe” and called the Russian attack on Ukraine a blatant violation of international law that is “not justified by anything.” He said Russia must immediately halt this military operation.

Liz Truss, British Foreign Secretary, called the attack “appalling” on Twitter and also emphasized that Britain will “work with international partners to respond to this dreadful act of aggression.”

Canada condemned the attack on Ukraine and threatened Russia with severe sanctions. Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, said: “Russia’s actions will have serious consequences” and “we will continue close and swift cooperation with NATO and our allies to respond jointly to these reckless and dangerous actions.”
