Governor: Number of coronavirus patients in Khuzestan has increased by 200 percent

Gholamreza Shariati, the governor of Khuzestan, has announced a 200 percent increase in the number of coronavirus patients in the province over the past month.
Speaking on a television program on Sunday evening, May 11, he did not provide exact figures on the total number of cases and deaths from coronavirus in the province, but said the number of hospitalized patients had increased by 60 percent.
According to some reports, in recent days, an average of 200 new cases have been registered in Khuzestan Province daily.
According to Mr. Shariati, nine cities in Khuzestan have currently been closed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, but "it is not necessary to prevent entry to the cities at this time."
This comment came as Zein al-Abidine Mousavi, the special governor of Abadan, announced on Sunday that the city would be placed under complete quarantine and that entrances to the city from Ahvaz and Mahshahr would be blocked.
The governor of Khuzestan has also said that the spread of coronavirus is higher in the peripheral areas of the cities of Khuzestan province.
The General Directorate of Prisons in Khuzestan Province has also announced that a number of prisoners have tested positive.
The department's announcement, issued on May 12, did not mention the number of these prisoners and stated that the infected people "are recovering without the need for hospitalization in medical centers outside the prison."
