Iran: Death sentence for Christian convert

Sina Dehghan, a 22-year-old Christian convert, has been sentenced to death on charges of organizing a teachers' protest campaign and insulting the holy places through his posts on Line and Instagram.

According to news received from Christian activists inside Iran, the Voice of Christians in Iran (Vocir) news agency reported that Sina Dehghan, a Christian convert who is currently serving his sentence in Arak Central Prison, has been sentenced to death on charges of organizing a teachers' protest campaign and insulting sacred places through his writings on LINE and Instagram. Sahralyasi, a women's soccer coach, was also sentenced to six years in prison on charges of participating in teachers' protest rallies in March 2014, as well as being a member of a religious protest campaign and posting critical articles on LINE. In recent years, many people have been punished on charges of insulting sacred places for their criticism of financial corruption and clerical crimes.

An informed source has reported that Sina Dehqan has taken over all activities in the hope that the other defendants in the case, including Sahar Ilyasi, will be released, which of course has not happened yet and they are in prison.
The other defendant in this case, whose name has not been released, has also been sentenced to life imprisonment.
These three people were arrested in Tehran in October 2015 and are being held in Arak Prison, and their sentences were announced to them by the Arak Revolutionary Court in April of this year.
