Most cases of child marriage involve men marrying children and teenage girls. Child marriage has been a problem in the country for years, and despite the efforts of women's rights activists and civil society activists, there has been no change in the laws and there is no legal prohibition on child marriage.

In Iran, according to the law, the minimum legal age for marriage for girls is 13 years old, but with the consent of the father and "on the condition of expediency, with the determination of a competent court," girls younger than 13 can be married.

While the country's official laws give the green light to the marriage of children under 13, Iran is one of the few countries where family law officially allows the marriage of girls younger than 15.

A review of annual statistics indicates that in the last decade, more than 15,000 girls under the age of 15 have given birth in Iran. In addition, according to statistics from the Iranian Civil Registration Organization, from 2013 to 2020, a total of more than one million girls under the age of 18 have been married in Iran.
