Human Rights Watch calls for immediate release of Labor Day detainees in Iran

Human Rights Watch has issued a statement calling for the immediate release of those detained on International Labor Day in Iran.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, May 15, Human Rights Watch called on Iranian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release "at least eight activists and journalists" detained during the International Workers' Day protests.
The statement emphasized that these individuals were detained for exercising their right to peaceful assembly and should be released.
The statement names Neda Naji, Atefeh Rangriz, Nahid Khodajoo, Nasrin Javadi, Farhad Sheikhi, Hassan Saeedi, and two journalists Marzieh Amiri and Keyvan Samimi as those arrested.
International Labor Day rallies in Iran turned violent, with dozens of people being arrested. Following the arrests, the US State Department's Persian Twitter account criticized the arrests of Iranian labor activists on International Labor Day in a message.
The US State Department has said that the Islamic Republic regime could have paid the salaries of workers in Iran with the money it has spent in Syria.
Earlier, Amnesty International issued a statement on International Workers' Day calling on the authorities of the Islamic Republic to immediately release workers and civil society activists who were arrested during strikes and other peaceful protests.
