Ten-year record for Lake Urmia water volume broken

Atabak Jafari, CEO of the West Azerbaijan Regional Water Company, said that with Lake Urmia's water reaching 5 billion cubic meters, the "record for water volume" of the lake in the "past decade" has been broken.
Speaking to IRNA on Monday, April 28, he announced that the lake's area has increased to 3,178 square kilometers, and the lake level has also increased by 21 centimeters compared to last year.
Noting that rainfall has helped the lake, he emphasized that Lake Urmia "is still a long way from its good days."
Lake Urmia had been drying up over the past decade, with about 80% of it drying up by 2015.
Simultaneously with the release of good news about the positive impact of recent rainfall on the condition of Lake Urmia, the Ministry of Energy's Water Research Institute has warned that there is a "possibility of flooding" in 12 provinces due to the increase in rainfall between May 26 and 20.
According to the institute's report, there is a risk of flooding in the provinces of Tehran, Alborz, Mazandaran, Markazi, Khuzestan, Lorestan, Fars, Kerman, North Khorasan, Khorasan Razavi, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, and Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad.
