Sullivan: Returning to the JCPOA is in the interest of the US and its partners

The US National Security Advisor says the United States is determined to ensure that Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon. The US administration believes that reciprocity in the JCPOA is in the best interests of the United States and its partners.

The White House national security adviser stressed on Monday, June 27, that the United States' position on Iran's nuclear program is clear. "We are determined to ensure that Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon. We think a diplomatic agreement is the best way to do that," he said.

"We think a mutual return to the JCPOA is in the best interest of the United States and our partners," Jake Sullivan told reporters at a news conference in Washington regarding indirect U.S.-Iran talks in Qatar.

Indirect nuclear talks between Iran and the United States, mediated by the European Union, will begin today, Tuesday, June 28 (July 28), in Doha, Qatar, after a three-month delay.

The US national security adviser added, "There is a deal on the table for Iran and it is up to Iran to decide whether to accept it or not."

Iranian officials confirmed on Monday, July 26, that indirect talks between Iran and the United States, mediated by the European Union, will be held in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday, July 26.

Meanwhile, Robert Malley, the US special representative for Iran, arrived in Doha, Qatar, on Monday to hold these negotiations.

An Iranian official told Reuters that Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Ali Bagheri Kani, will be in Doha for talks on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 28 and 29.

These indirect talks between Iran and the United States in Doha, Qatar, take place three days after the visit of Josep Borrell, the European Union's foreign policy coordinator, to Tehran.

Negotiations to revive the 2015 nuclear deal, which were underway in Vienna, the capital of Austria, have been stalled since April of this year without reaching a conclusion, and during this time, tensions over the Iranian nuclear issue also increased.

The issuance of a resolution by the International Atomic Energy Agency's Board of Governors against Tehran for its failure to cooperate with the agency and Iran's response in disabling the agency's surveillance cameras were a result of these tensions.

Josep Borrell said during his trip to Tehran: "After my trip, the Vienna negotiations will begin and my team will be there. Reaching an agreement is important for the whole world and the world because we have been living in a different world since February. The war between Russia and Ukraine continues and if an agreement is reached in such an atmosphere, it is very important."
