Amnesty International calls for the "immediate" release of political prisoner Behnam Mosivand

Following the transfer of Behnam Musivand to a hospital outside Evin Prison due to his poor health resulting from his hunger strike, Amnesty International called for the immediate release of this political prisoner on Wednesday, May 27.

The human rights organization stressed that Behnam Musivand is being "unjustly" imprisoned for his human rights activities and that "Iranian authorities should immediately release him."

Mr. Musivand was beaten by officers on April 20 for refusing to wear handcuffs and shackles to receive medical services outside the prison, and has been on a hunger strike since then.

Yesterday, the HRANA news website reported, citing informed sources, that Behnam Musivand has serious problems with his digestive system and liver enzymes.

It is not clear which hospital this political prisoner was transferred to and what his current condition is.

Following Mr. Musivand's hunger strike, reports of his serious physical condition had been published in recent days.

This civil activist was sentenced to a total of six years in prison by the Tehran Revolutionary Court in September 2019 on charges such as "gathering and colluding with the intention of acting against national security" and "propaganda activity against the system."

The Court of Appeal also confirmed this sentence in its entirety. However, citing Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, which provides for the most severe punishment, five years of it will be applicable.
