Iran's Judiciary Declares Marzieh Amiri's Charges as "Security"

After about 20 days of the arrest of Sharq journalist Marzieh Amiri, the Judiciary Spokesperson announced that her charges were "security-related."

According to ISNA, Gholamhossein Esmaili said on Tuesday, May 11, regarding Marzieh Amiri's lack of permission to meet with her lawyer, saying, "A criminal act in the field of security has been attributed to her, and not just any lawyer can represent her in this regard."

Marzieh Amiri, a journalist and social sciences student at the University of Tehran, had gone to the Vazra detention center to follow up on the situation of those detained on International Labor Day, where she was arrested and taken to Ward 209 of Evin Prison.

However, reports indicate that he was unable to access a lawyer during this time.

The Iranian judiciary recently announced that defendants in political and security cases can only choose a lawyer from among the people on this list, by communicating a list of "approved lawyers" to prosecutors.

The announcement of this list was met with a reaction from Iranian lawyers, who described such an act as a violation of Iranian law.

Javed Rehman, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran, also expressed concern about the arrest of lawyers and the prevention of defendants' access to lawyers during the process of filing cases.
