Washington Examiner: At least two members of the Quds Force planned to kill John Bolton

On Monday, March 6, the Washington Examiner reported, citing a US Justice Department official, that "at least two members of the IRGC's Quds Force" planned to assassinate former US National Security Advisor John Bolton, while the JCPOA negotiations were underway.

John Bolton has a harsh stance towards the Islamic Republic of Iran and has even supported a military attack to overthrow the regime.

The report adds that the results of the US government's investigation and the findings of the Justice Department provide "credible evidence" of Iranian conspiracy, but White House officials "insist that making this matter public could derail the nuclear negotiations."

The Washington Examiner writes that there is a small chance that a secret indictment has been issued against members of the Quds Force involved in the plot to assassinate Mr. Bolton, but an unnamed Justice Department official told the publication that given the seriousness of the assassination plot and the evidence available, an indictment should be issued immediately and made public.

The report, citing a Justice Department source, states that the plan to assassinate Mr. Bolton also included hiring a person in the United States.

The American publication adds that US security agencies became aware of the plot by the IRGC's Quds Force in the early stages of the matter and have been implementing strict, round-the-clock security measures to protect Mr. Bolton's life since late last year.

White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan warned on January 9 of this year that any attack by the Islamic Republic of Iran on American citizens would face "severe consequences."

On January 4, on the second anniversary of the killing of Qassem Soleimani, the former commander of the Quds Force, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran said: "The aggressor and murderer, the then US president, must be punished, and God's judgment must be imposed on him."

Ebrahim Raisi had threatened that if a mechanism was not established to prosecute former President Donald Trump, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and other individuals he called "criminals," "the hand of revenge would come out of the nation's sleeve."

Forbes magazine reported two months ago, citing four American sources, that threats against Pompeo and Bolton were continuing.
