Lawyer for Romina Ashrafi's mother: In this case, legal punishment should not be sufficient

Ebrahim Nikdel-Moghaddam, the lawyer for the mother of Romina Ashrafi, a 13-year-old girl who was murdered by her father, says that the killer committed the murder with an investigation in mind and that in such cases, "jurisprudential punishment" should not be sufficient.

In an interview published in the Shargh newspaper on Monday, September 1, he emphasized that in this case, "supplementary punishments" should have been issued, given the "dangerous nature of the perpetrator" and the "very violent" nature of the murder.

According to Mr. Nikdel Moghadam, Bahman Khavari, Romina Ashrafi's father, was provoked by his relatives and told the court that he had killed his daughter after "investigating" the matter and to "clear his honor."

Romina Ashrafi was killed by her father with a sickle in her sleep on June 1 of this year, after the police returned her home after five days of running away with a young man.

Two days ago, the Criminal Court of Gilan Province issued a verdict against Romina Ashrafi's father, sentencing him to 9 years in prison and paying blood money to Romina's mother.

After the verdict was issued, Rana Dashti, Romina's mother, said that the court's decision "has brought fear and terror to me and my family" and that she will appeal it.

According to Article 612 of the Islamic Penal Code, a father who kills his child is not subject to retribution and, if convicted in court, is sentenced to pay blood money and imprisonment for up to ten years.
