Coronavirus in Iran: Threefold difference between death toll recorded by the Ministry of Health and the Civil Registration Organization

New statistics from the Civil Registration Organization show that 131,294 people died in Iran this summer. This figure was about 94,441 in the summer of 2019 and about 91,737 in the summer of 2020.

Thus, the death toll in Iran this summer has been recorded at around 37,000 to 40,000 more than the same season in previous years.

This is while, according to statistics from the Ministry of Health, the total number of deaths from Corona this summer is estimated at 14,736.

Accordingly, the increase in the number of deaths this summer compared to the summers of previous years is almost three times the official coronavirus death statistics for the same season.

Previously, some Iranian officials announced that the coronavirus death toll was much higher than the official figures announced by the Ministry of Health.

Mohammad Reza Zafarghandi, head of the Iranian Medical System Organization, also recently admitted that the death toll is "at least three times higher" than the Ministry of Health's figures, a ratio that is also exactly consistent with the statistics of the Civil Registration Organization.

The official statistics of the Ministry of Health have always been subject to doubt and ambiguity since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic crisis, and there have even been reports of late announcements of the arrival of the coronavirus in Iran.

According to Nader Tavakoli, deputy director of medical services at the Tehran Province Coronavirus Response Headquarters, the actual number of people infected with the coronavirus in Iran is "much larger than the number currently being reported as the number of cases."

Civil registration statistics show that in the first half of this year, a total of 242,000 people died in Iran.

However, the death toll for the same period last year was 186,000, and two years ago, it was 182,000.

In the first half of this year, approximately 56,000 to 60,000 more people died in Iran than in the same period in previous years.

Statistics from the Ministry of Health show that less than 30,000 people died from coronavirus in the first six months of 2020.

The stark difference between the official number of coronavirus deaths and the increase in the country's total deaths is apparently not unrelated to the significant increase in the number of coronavirus cases in Iran after the mourning period of the month of Muharram; in the past few days alone, the number of infected people has reached over eight thousand, which is almost three times the number in the first half of this year.

The coronavirus death rate has also spiked to over 400 people per day.
