Human rights organization: 168 people executed in Iran in five months

The Norway-based Iranian Human Rights Organization reported an increase in the number of executions in Iran in the first five months of 2022, stating that this number has increased by more than one and a half times compared to the same period last year.

According to this report, at least 168 people were executed in Iran in the first five months of this year, compared to 110 in the same period last year.

This organization, which tracks and publishes news about executions in Iran, says that in May 2022 (coinciding with the beginning of the May protests this year), the highest monthly execution rate was recorded since 2018.

The report states: "A study of the execution trend in Iran shows that political events have a direct impact on the number of executions. For example, on the eve of elections, when popular votes are needed, executions decrease, and during times of protests, the number of executions increases."

According to this report, more than 25 percent of this year's executions involved Baloch prisoners.

Mahmoud Amirimoghadam, director of the Iranian Human Rights Organization, said: "Execution is the government's most important political tool for suppressing and intimidating society, and the weakest segments of society are the low-cost victims of these executions."

Mahmoud Amiri-Moghaddam called on the international community to prevent further executions in Iran by raising the political cost of these executions. The Iranian Human Rights Organization and several other human rights organizations announced on Monday, June 6, the mass execution of 12 prisoners on charges including murder and drug trafficking in Zahedan Prison.

According to the Iranian Human Rights Organization, on Thursday, June 9, at least five prisoners were hanged in prisons in Khalkhal, Kermanshah, Birjand, and Ardabil.

Including these executions, at least 191 people have been executed in Iran since the beginning of this year until June 9th.

According to the report, two of those executed were likely "child criminals." The high number of executions and the execution of "child criminals" in Iran in recent years have always been at the forefront of global criticism of the performance of the Islamic Republic's authorities.

The Islamic Republic is one of the few governments in the world that violates the provisions of the Universal Convention on the Rights of the Child and continues to execute individuals who were under 18 years of age at the time of the crime.

According to Amnesty International, Iran and Yemen were the only countries to hang “child criminals” last year. Amnesty International announced in its annual report on June 20 that Iran was responsible for 54 percent of all recorded executions in the world in 2021, with at least 314 executions.

In addition, Amnesty International says that most people executed in Iran were deprived of a fair trial and their confessions were obtained under torture.

Iran is the second country in the world after China in terms of the number of executions.
