Remarkable Relocation of Historic Church in Northern Sweden

The historic Kiruna Church in northern Sweden was remarkably relocated by a fleet of trailers.

“The Great Procession of the Church”;

In an unprecedented move, the 113-year-old Kiruna Church in the northernmost point of Sweden was placed on a set of massive trailers and transferred to a new location after traveling a five-kilometer route. The operation was carried out due to the expansion of the region’s massive iron ore mine, which has been operating since 1910 and whose deepening has gradually caused cracks in houses and streets throughout the city.

Since 2004, a program to relocate the city’s buildings has been underway to prevent residents’ lives from being exposed to the danger of land subsidence. The historic Kiruna Church, along with its bell tower, was the largest and most important structure that needed to be relocated, and this relocation was something like a church procession through Swedish streets.

With a width of 40 meters and a weight of approximately 672 tons, this church was one of the most difficult structures to move. For this relocation, the mining company LKAB was forced to reconstruct part of the route. In this reconstruction, the main road was expanded from 9 meters to 24 meters, and a bridge was completely demolished to allow the convoy of trailers to proceed unobstructed.

Stefan Johansson, the project manager, said: “We conducted extensive preparations. This is a historic event and a very large and complex operation with no margin for error. Everything is under control.”

According to estimates, the transfer of this structure will take at least 12 hours, and the speed of the convoy will vary between half a kilometer and one and a half kilometers per hour.

The relocation of this church turned into a two-day ceremony attended by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and featuring musical performances by the KAJ group, a participant in Eurovision 2025. Swedish national television also broadcast the entire process live and called it the “Great Church Procession.”

Despite public excitement, some have expressed concerns about the consequences of this project. Lars Markus-Kohmonen, head of one of the northern reindeer herding organizations, has warned that plans for mining expansion could disrupt reindeer migration routes and threaten the livelihoods of herders in the region.

According to local media reports, the budget for relocating this church exceeded 10 billion Swedish crowns (approximately 898 million euros), all funded by the mining company operator.

The Kiruna Church is not only a religious building but also a cultural heritage site for Swedes. In 2001, citizens of the country selected it as the best building constructed before 1950 in a survey by the Ministry of Culture.
