“Jean-Noël Barrot”: Snapback Mechanism Will Be Implemented If Iran Does Not Cooperate

“Jean-Noël Barrot”, France’s Foreign Minister, announced the implementation of the snapback mechanism in case Iran does not cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Jean-Noël Barrot, France’s Foreign Minister, said on Tuesday, July 15, at a meeting of European Union foreign ministers in Brussels: “We want the resumption of the activities of inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency and the start of a diplomatic process that leads to a negotiated solution and monitors Iran’s nuclear, missile, and destabilizing activities.”

He warned of Iran’s violation of the JCPOA provisions and added: “The fact is that Iran has violated the commitments it accepted ten years ago during nuclear negotiations. Therefore, France and its partners have the right to reimpose global sanctions on weapons, banks, and nuclear equipment that were lifted ten years ago. If Iran does not fulfill its responsibility, we will implement these measures by the end of August (September 9) at the latest.”

Noël Barrot emphasized that if the Iranian government makes no progress on a new nuclear agreement by September 9, the three European signatories to the JCPOA—Britain, France, and Germany—will activate the snapback mechanism, in which case all international sanctions against Iran, including banking and financial sanctions, will be immediately implemented.

Iranian officials also warned the aforementioned three European countries about the implementation of the mechanism. Ismail Baqaei, spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, responding to the implementation of the snapback mechanism, said: “The implementation of the snapback mechanism will result in a decisive response from Iran.”
