Europe Announces Readiness to Activate Trigger Mechanism

European countries announced their readiness to activate the trigger mechanism against Iran.

Last Friday, July 25, a meeting was held in Istanbul, Turkey aimed at nuclear talks between Germany, Britain, and France, which yielded no results. The European troika also announced that if Iran does not comply with its nuclear commitments, the trigger mechanism would be activated.

Britain, France, and Germany issued a threatening message on the night of July 25, equivalent to August 3, stating: “If Iran does not comply with specific commitments regarding its nuclear program, we are ready to activate the automatic snapback mechanism of sanctions.”

Germany’s Foreign Ministry also published a joint statement from the European allied countries on the social network X, writing: “The European troika is ready to activate the automatic snapback mechanism of sanctions, but if Iran complies with its legal commitments and observes specified criteria, the deadline for the return of international sanctions will be extended. Iran should choose the path of diplomacy.”

The JCPOA member states also demanded information regarding the fate of 400 kilograms of highly enriched uranium and called for inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency of Iran’s nuclear program. The reason for their request to clarify the status of the aforementioned highly enriched uranium is that since the American attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities, there has been no information available about the storage location of these materials, and the Islamic Republic has provided no information about the loss or transfer of enriched uranium so far.

“Rafael Grossi,” the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, while expressing hope for the return of IAEA inspectors to Iran by the end of the current year, said: “It is important that we now discuss the details of resuming inspections with Tehran. Iran must be transparent about its nuclear program.”

Grossi also added in yesterday’s meeting: “The Islamic Republic has historically been non-transparent about its nuclear program and in some cases has violated NPT regulations.”

Despite the statements by JCPOA member countries regarding the unsuccessful outcome of yesterday’s talks on Iran’s nuclear program and threats to activate the trigger mechanism, “Majid Takht-Ravanchi” and “Kazem Gharibabadi,” Deputy Foreign Ministers of the Islamic Republic, after the conclusion of negotiations, without any comment on the requests of the aforementioned countries, stated: “The European parties have agreed that negotiations will continue.”
