Christians Killed by Extremist Islamists in Nigeria

Extremist Islamists attacked a Christian village in Nigeria, killing approximately 50 Christians.

Over the past week, extremist Islamists attacked a Christian village in Benue State in central Nigeria. In addition to looting the property of residents, they killed around 50 people. The state is home to Muslims in the north and Christians in the south. The Islamists attacked the village on the pretext that part of the village’s land belongs to their grazing lands.

According to statements from Christians in the region, Fulani Islamists have repeatedly attacked Christian villages in the Ukam area of Benue State over the past three months under this same pretext, killing many residents and taking others hostage.

The Fulani are recognized as Africa’s largest semi-nomadic ethnic group with a population of approximately 40 million people. They repeatedly attack others claiming that farmers have attempted to steal their livestock. Government officials have refrained from addressing the Fulani Islamist attacks on Christians, which are rooted in religious ideology, and instead prefer to frame the issue as a land dispute. However, Christian leaders have a different perspective on these attacks. They believe that Islamist attacks on Christians in Nigeria are motivated by a desire to seize Christian lands and impose Islam on them.
