Acid attack on child bride victim in Jahrom; suspect arrested

Hrana News Agency – A man in one of the villages of Jahrom County who carried out an acid attack on his 17-year-old wife has been arrested. Acid is one of the few products whose market for buying and selling has never declined in the country. In addition to the ease of access and obtaining acid in Iranian markets, the lack of sufficient preventive laws has also contributed to the continuation of the crime known as “acid attacks”.

According to Hrana News Agency, citing state radio and television, a man in one of the villages of Jahrom County who carried out an acid attack on his 17-year-old wife has been arrested.

Colonel Razmjuyi, commander of the Jahrom police force, said: “Following the report of the police emergency center 110 about an acid attack incident in one of the villages of this county, the identification and arrest of the perpetrator was immediately placed on the agenda of police officers”.

He added: “Law enforcement officers in the Kordian district learned in initial investigations that a man approximately 25 years old, due to family disputes, after pouring acid on the body parts of his wife, quickly fled the scene”.

Colonel Razmjuyi, stating that officers were able to identify and arrest the suspect in less than 2 hours after conducting initial investigations, said: “This person cited family problems with his 17-year-old wife as his motivation”.

The Jahrom police commander continued: “The suspect was referred to the prosecutor’s office to proceed with legal procedures”.

Acid is one of the few products whose market for buying and selling has never declined in the country. In addition to the ease of access and obtaining acid in Iranian markets, the lack of sufficient preventive laws has also contributed to the continuation of the crime known as “acid attacks”.

Although a law on the punishment of acid attack crimes was passed in 1958, and in addition to that, general provisions of the Islamic Penal Code can be used in criminalizing this inhumane act, evidence and circumstances indicate the ineffectiveness of existing laws in preventing it.

In late Ordibehesht 1398, five of the seven articles of the bill to increase punishment for acid attacks and support for victims were approved by representatives in an open parliamentary session.

After amendments were made to the articles of this bill, finally on October 12, 1398, representatives of the Islamic Consultative Assembly in an open session reviewed and amended the bill to increase punishment for acid attacks and support for resulting victims that had been returned from the Guardian Council.

In November 1398, this law, after approval by the Guardian Council, was sent to the Ministry of Justice for implementation.
