Following Non-Compliance with Separation of Crimes Principle; Nahid Shirpisheh Beaten in Kachwi Prison of Karaj

Hrana News Agency – Nahid Shirpisheh, mother of Pooya Bakhtiari, one of the victims of the November 2019 protests, was recently beaten by an inmate accused of violent crimes in the quarantine ward of Kachwi Prison in Karaj. The failure to observe the principle of separation of crimes and the detention of political prisoners alongside inmates convicted of common and violent crimes has previously resulted in several clashes and posed serious risks to life. Ms. Shirpisheh was transferred to Kachwi Prison in Karaj on Thursday, July 27th.

According to Hrana News Agency, the news outlet of the Iranian human rights activists group, Nahid Shirpisheh, mother of Pooya Bakhtiari, a victim of the November 2019 protests, was recently beaten by one of the inmates accused of violent crimes in the quarantine ward of Kachwi Prison in Karaj.

An informed source regarding the details of this incident told Hrana: “Ms. Shirpisheh was beaten a few days ago by one of the inmates accused of violent crimes. This inmate even attempted to strangle Ms. Shirpisheh’s neck, but they were separated following the intervention of prison authorities.”

On Monday, July 11th, Nahid Shirpisheh and Mehrdad Bakhtiari, mother and uncle of Pooya Bakhtiari, Sakina Ahmadi mother of Ibrahim Ketabdar, Rahima Yousefzadeh mother of Navid Behbudi, Mahboubeh Ramazani mother of Pejman Goli Pour, Saeid Damoor brother of Vahid Damoor, and Somayeh Jafarpanah, sister of Mohsen Jafarpanah, were arrested by security forces. On the other hand, BBC Farsi also reported the arrest of Talat Meshki, mother of Mohsen Jafarpanah, Iran Elahi, mother of Mehrdad Moeinfar, and Zeinab Mohammadi, mother of Mohammad Taheri. Among these citizens, Sakina Ahmadi, Mahboubeh Ramazani, and Rahima Yousefzadeh were released.

Ms. Shirpisheh was transferred to Kachwi Prison in Karaj on Thursday, August 27th, and continues to be held in the quarantine ward of this prison. This transfer occurs at a time when a number of members of the families of November 2019 victims remain detained in security detention centers without clarification of their status, 24 days after their arrest.

Hrana had previously reported on Monday, July 18th, 2022, on the continued detention and unclear status of these citizens.

As of the time this report was prepared, there is no information available regarding the reasons for their detention or the charges against these citizens.

Ms. Shirpisheh has previously been arrested by security agencies due to her civil activities. Nahid Shirpisheh, mother of Pooya Bakhtiari (born September 10, 1992 – died November 16, 2019 in Mehr City, Karaj), is one of the victims of Iran’s nationwide protests in 2019.
