Tunnel Ceiling Collapses During Kermanshah Metro Construction

Following the collapse of a tunnel ceiling under construction for Kermanshah Metro on Thursday evening, July 7, vehicle traffic was banned on the street where this project is being implemented.

The Headquarters of Khatam al-Anbia of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps is participating in the construction of this metro.

According to ISNA news agency, Bahman Amiri Moghaddam, the governor of Kermanshah, ordered during an inspection of the tunnel collapse site that the street where the metro line is being constructed be closed until “soil stabilization, reinforcement and consolidation of the tunnel” is completed.

No reports have been published so far regarding possible casualties and financial damages from the Kermanshah Metro tunnel collapse.

The implementation plan for the construction of Kermanshah Metro Line 1 began in late 2011 and was supposed to be completed within 42 months, but due to various government policies, including the necessity of building a monorail instead of a metro during Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s administration, the project faced multiple suspensions.

According to the former governor of Kermanshah, the completion of the first phase of Kermanshah Urban Rail project with a budget of 750 billion tomans was supposed to be completed by the end of 2020 with the participation of the Planning and Budget Organization and Bank Sepah.

The former mayor of Kermanshah also announced in 2017 the conclusion of a 100 billion toman contract between the provincial municipality and Khatam al-Anbia Headquarters for the implementation of the second phase of the metro tunnel in the province.

This is not the first time a metro tunnel under construction in Iran has collapsed, including ground subsidence and the creation of a three-meter-deep pit on Pasdaran Street in Tehran in 2016, tunnel collapse on 17th of Shahrivar Street in Tehran in November 2020 which resulted in the death of a worker, and the collapse of Kiyanshahr Metro tunnel in Tehran in 2016 which resulted in the deaths of four people and the injury of six others.
