Cause of ‘Explosion Sound and Ground Tremor’ in Sarabl, Ilam Remains Unknown

While Iranian media reported that on Saturday morning, April 17, an ‘explosion sound’ and ‘ground tremor accompanied by a terrible noise’ in the city of Sarabl located in Ilam province frightened residents, the head of Kermanshah’s seismological network said: ‘When a sound was heard from the ground in Sarabl, Ilam, we checked all the waves and found no signs of an earthquake, unless this sound was related to another geological phenomenon.’

The Islamic Republic News Agency also reported that ‘no earthquake has been recorded in this area at Tehran University’s Geophysics Center.’

Saeid Reza Karimian, the governor of Chardavol County, which includes the city of Sarabl, told Iran’s state television news network that such sounds have been heard in this region since 2017, but the cause of these ‘noises’ has not been determined so far.

Lack of reporting or presentation of inaccurate reports about explosion-like sounds, the latest of which dates back to December of last year, has always led to numerous speculations.

On December 25 of last year, the sound of multiple explosions in Kermanshah was reported on social media. Iranian government media wrote that ‘the main source of the heard sound was lightning strikes in the western region of the country,’ but days later, Israeli media reported that an Iranian drone facility had been targeted by Israel at that time, during which ‘hundreds of drones were destroyed.’

The Sarabl region also became famous during the Iran-Iraq War due to the presence of a missile base commanded by Hassan Tehrani Moghaddam. Hassan Tehrani Moghaddam, whom Iranian government media refer to as the founder of the ‘Revolutionary Guards’ artillery and missile forces,’ was killed in November 2011 following an explosion at a military base near Malard, Karaj.
