Iranians Gather in Washington in Response to Suppression of Civil Protests in Iran

A group of Iranians residing in Washington D.C., Virginia, and Maryland gathered in front of the White House on Sunday, December 28, in response to peaceful protests in Isfahan and Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari and the violent suppression of protesters by the Islamic Republic’s security forces.

Dr. Ramesh Sepehrad, a supporter of the People’s Mujahedin Organization of Iran and one of the coordinators of this protest gathering, told a Voice of America reporter that the aim of the gathering is to show solidarity with the Iranian people and to make their voice heard at the White House. He further stated that the only way to free the Iranian people is through an uprising and the overthrow of the Islamic Republic.

Tara Shafiee, a supporter of the National Council of Resistance and the People’s Mujahedin Organization of Iran, also explained the reason for holding the gathering in front of the White House as making the voice of protesters heard by White House officials, and believed that the Biden administration should adopt a clear policy toward the Islamic Republic.

Pahlavan Moslem Eskandar Filabi was another protester present at this gathering. In an interview with a Voice of America reporter about his goal for participating in this rally, he said that through this he is asking the world to save the Iranian people from the “hostage-taking” of the Islamic Republic.

Finally, the protesters concluded with a symbolic march around the square facing the White House, chanting slogans such as “Isfahan and Chaharmahal, we support you,” “Every Iranian’s cry is death to Khamenei and Raisi,” and “We are women and men, we will fight until we fight,” demonstrating their solidarity with peaceful protests in Iran.

Peaceful protests by farmers and Isfahan citizens over the water crisis and the Islamic Republic government’s mismanagement of the issue began approximately three weeks ago and have been met with violent suppression by the Islamic Republic’s security forces.

Ned Price, spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, said on Saturday in a tweet while expressing “deep concern about the violent suppression of peaceful protesters in Isfahan,” wrote: “The Iranian people have the right to express their frustration and hold their government accountable.”
