Two Abadan Refinery Managers Arrested for Involvement in ‘Embezzlement Ring’

Iranian security authorities have arrested two managers of Phase 2 of Abadan Refinery for their involvement in an ’embezzlement ring’.

Iranian media reported on Thursday, November 20, that these two ‘prominent managers’ were arrested on Wednesday evening at their workplace by judicial order.

Embezzlement and corruption by managers in Iran’s governmental and public institutions has become a controversial issue over the past three decades.

Last month, the former head of the Central Bank and his deputy were each sentenced to 10 and 8 years in prison respectively for ‘disrupting the country’s foreign exchange system’.

The United States has repeatedly condemned widespread and institutionalized corruption in the organs of the Islamic Republic and cited it as one of the most important factors in Iran’s numerous economic problems facing its people.
