Baku Seizes Large Heroin Shipment Destined from Iran to Ukraine

Azerbaijan’s Border Service announced the discovery and seizure of a large heroin shipment destined from Tehran to Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine.
According to a report published on Thursday, May 20, on the website of the Azerbaijan Republic’s Border Service, the 244-kilogram heroin shipment was hidden inside a truck carrying watermelon cargo.
Video released by the country’s border service shows that the shipment was discovered at Astara customs using trained dogs.
Azerbaijan’s customs had previously reported on April 14 of this year the discovery of a 230-kilogram heroin shipment loaded from Iran in a truck carrying potato cargo.
This truck also entered Azerbaijan from Iran through Astara customs and was intended to transport its cargo to Ukraine, but trained dogs successfully detected the heroin shipment hidden inside the potato cargo.
Currently, approximately 200 Iranian citizens are in Azerbaijan’s prisons, most of whom have been detained on charges related to drug trafficking.
Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan, pardoned seven Iranians through a decree signed on the occasion of this year’s Nowruz holiday.
