Robert Malley Criticizes Continued Imprisonment of Nasrin Sotoudeh in Iran

Robert Malley, the U.S. Special Representative for Iran Affairs, said on Sunday, June 23rd, that human rights lawyer and activist Nasrin Sotoudeh should not spend even a single day in prison, following a tweet he posted about the imprisoned lawyer in Iran.
In his tweet, Malley wrote: “Three years have passed since Nasrin Sotoudeh was sentenced to 38.5 years in prison and 148 lashes for defending women’s rights in Iran. Even from inside prison, Sotoudeh continues to advocate for humane treatment of political prisoners. She should not spend even a single day in prison.”
Nasrin Sotoudeh was sentenced to a lengthy prison term by the Iranian judicial system for defending political prisoners on charges such as “assembly and conspiracy against national security, spreading falsehoods, and disturbing public opinion.”
On Friday, June 21st, Robert Malley also posted a tweet expressing regret over the death of Sasan Niknafs in Tehran’s main prison. He noted that Niknafs, 36 years old and father of two children, was unjustly imprisoned for expressing his views on social media, and was cruelly denied medical furlough.
