Nasrin Sotoudeh in Letter to Prison Organization Chief: ‘Close Qarchak Prison’

Nasrin Sotoudeh, a lawyer and human rights activist, in a letter addressed to the head of the prison organization, while referring to the substandard conditions of Qarchak Prison in Varamin, called for the closure of this prison. In part of this letter, it states: “The spaces inside the prison are dilapidated and so cramped and narrow with low ceilings and without windows and proper ventilation, creating inhumane conditions. The unpleasant odor of the prison is even distressing for prison staff.”

According to Hrana news agency, the news organ of a collection of human rights activists in Iran, Nasrin Sotoudeh, a lawyer and human rights activist held in Qarchak Prison in Varamin, in a letter addressed to the head of the prison organization has described the substandard conditions of the prison where she is detained.

In part of this letter, Nasrin Sotoudeh addressed the head of the prison organization and asked him to proceed with the closure of Qarchak Prison due to its substandard and inhumane conditions, and to establish a prison befitting Iranian women in an appropriate location.

She also wrote while referring to the fact that the first requirement for establishing a prison is the existence of suitable climate: “This is while this prison has neither clean water nor proper air for breathing. The spaces inside the prison are dilapidated and so cramped and narrow with low ceilings and without windows and proper ventilation, creating inhumane conditions. The unpleasant odor of the prison is even distressing for prison staff. Qarchak Prison is located in a remote area and the entire surroundings of this prison is a grazing ground and breeding place for camels, ostriches and various animals. Due to the great distance and remoteness from Tehran, many families cannot regularly visit the prisoners. The unhygienic environment and unsuitable climate causes the emergence and rapid spread of various diseases.”.

Regarding Nasrin Sotoudeh, it should be noted that she was arrested at her home on June 13, 2018 and transferred to Evin Prison. According to Ms. Sotoudeh’s lawyers, her sentence totals 38 years in prison with 148 lashes for 2 cases; 5 years in prison for the first case and 33 years in prison with 148 lashes for the second case. Regarding the second case, Ms. Sotoudeh was sentenced in absentia at a court hearing held on December 30, 2018 in Branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran on seven charges including “assembly and conspiracy against national security, propaganda activity against the system, effective membership in the illegal and anti-security group Center for Human Rights Defenders, LEGAM (Campaign for the Abolition of Capital Punishment) and National Peace Council, inciting people to corruption and debauchery and facilitating it, appearing without proper Islamic hijab in the interrogation branch office, disrupting public order and peace, and publishing falsehoods with the intent of disturbing public opinion,” to a total of 33 years imprisonment and 148 lashes. In this case, according to Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, 12 years of her 33-year sentence is enforceable as the most severe punishment. Ms. Sotoudeh was transferred from the women’s ward of Evin Prison to Qarchak Prison in Varamin on October 20, 2019.
