Ten-Year Record for Lake Urmia Water Volume Broken

Atbak Jafari, CEO of the Regional Water Company of West Azerbaijan, stated that with Lake Urmia’s water reaching 5 billion cubic meters, the lake’s “water volume record” over the “past decade” has been broken.
Speaking with the IRNA news agency on Monday, April 28, he announced an increase in the lake’s surface area to 3,178 square kilometers, and the lake’s water level has also risen by 21 centimeters compared to last year.
Referencing the contribution of rainfall to the lake’s recovery, he emphasized that Lake Urmia “still has a long way to go to reach its best days.”
Lake Urmia had been drying up over the past decade, with approximately 80 percent of it dried up by 2015.
Concurrently with the announcement of positive news regarding the beneficial effects of recent rainfall on Lake Urmia’s condition, the Water Research Institute of the Ministry of Energy has warned that given the increase in rainfall during the period of April 26 to May 12, there is a “possibility of flooding” in 12 provinces.
According to the institute’s report, there is a risk of flooding in the provinces of Tehran, Alborz, Mazandaran, Markazi, Khuzestan, Lorestan, Fars, Kerman, North Khorasan, Razavi Khorasan, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, and Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad.
