Wife of Imprisoned Bahnam Mohammadi Darvish: We’ve Been Told Something Different About His Condition Every Day

Saleha Hosseini, wife of imprisoned Bahnam Mohammadi Darvish, who is currently hospitalized at Laqman Hospital, reported his physical condition as grave, citing hospital officials.

Ms. Hosseini said on Wednesday, February 19th, in a video message posted on Twitter by Ibrahim Allahbakhshi, a former imprisoned dervish, that Mr. Mohammadi has been in the ICU for four days.

She stated that on the first day, the family was told that he had died, but later they said he was alive on life support. Ms. Hosseini criticized the contradictions from hospital officials regarding the condition of this political prisoner.

Yesterday, shortly after videos from Bahnam Mohammadi’s mother were released, some bereaved mothers and those who have lost loved ones in recent years gathered in front of the hospital.

Nahid Shirpisha, mother of Pooya Bakhtiari, one of those killed in the November 2019 protests and one of these mothers, said to Voice of America on Tuesday night after gathering in front of the hospital about Bahnam Mohammadi’s latest condition: “I think he may be spending his final moments now with the machine. He is in a coma and unfortunately very close to death.”

In addition to Ms. Shirpisha, Sakina Ahmadi, mother of Ibrahim Ketabdar, another victim of the November 2019 protests; Shahnaz Akamali, mother of Mostafa Karimbigi, killed in the Green Movement protests; and Akram Naghibi, mother of Saeed Zeinali, who was arrested and disappeared in the university district in 1999, were present on Tuesday, February 18th, in front of Laqman Hospital where imprisoned dervish Bahnam Mohammadi is hospitalized.

Bahnam Mohammadi, an imprisoned Gonabadi dervish, was transferred from Evin Prison to Laqman Hospital in Tehran on Saturday, February 15th, following “drug poisoning.” On Sunday, February 16th, an Evin Prison officer told Bahnam Mohammadi’s family at Laqman Hospital that this political prisoner’s level of consciousness had decreased and he had fallen into a coma.

Mr. Mohammadi is among the Gonabadi dervishes arrested on charges of assembly and conspiracy in connection with the events of Golestan Haftom. He was sentenced to two years in prison and has been unable to be released on bail during this period.

Following the large-scale presence of security forces and plainclothes agents in February 2016 in front of the house of Noor Ali Tabandeh, the former head of the Gonabadi dervish order, a large number of Gonabadi dervishes gathered on that street to prevent the gathering of security and law enforcement forces in front of Noor Ali Tabandeh’s house and to restore the area to normal conditions.

These gatherings led to clashes between security forces and special units with the dervishes present at the scene.

During these clashes, hundreds of Gonabadi dervishes were wounded and arrested, and subsequently sentenced to severe punishments.

In recent years, the United States has repeatedly protested in its human rights reports the widespread violations of the rights of religious and ethnic minorities in Iran.
