Man Throws Acid at Wife and Son in Sadra City

The social deputy of the police command of Fars province reported the acid attack by an individual against his temporary wife and their child in the new city of Sadra. Acid is one of the few products whose buying and selling market in the country has never declined. In addition to the ease of access and obtaining acid in Iranian markets, the lack of sufficient preventive laws has also contributed to the continuation of the crime known as “acid attack”.
According to the Hrana news agency, citing IRNA, the social deputy of the police command of Fars province said: “On Tuesday, October 29, an individual threw acid at his 49-year-old temporary wife and their child in the new city of Sadra”.
Kavous Mohammadi clarified: “Police, in a preliminary investigation, learned that a man about 50 years old went to the door of his temporary wife’s house and got into a conflict with her due to family disputes, and then threw acid at this woman and her 20-year-old son”.
He stated: “In this confrontation, the accused was also injured due to the acid being thrown, and all three people were transferred to medical centers. After undergoing medical treatment, the accused will be handed over to the judicial authorities to proceed with legal procedures”.
The new city of Sadra is located approximately 20 kilometers northwest of Shiraz.
Acid is one of the few products whose buying and selling market in the country has never declined. In addition to the ease of access and obtaining acid in Iranian markets, the lack of sufficient preventive laws has also contributed to the continuation of the crime known as “acid attack”.
Although a law regarding the punishment of the acid attack crime was passed in 1958, and in addition to that, the general provisions of the Islamic Penal Code can also be used in criminalizing this inhumane act, however, evidence and circumstances indicate the ineffectiveness of existing laws in preventing it.
In late May 2019, five out of seven articles of the bill to increase punishment for acid attacks and support victims were approved by representatives in an open session of parliament.
After amendments were made to the articles of this bill, finally on October 21, 2019, representatives of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, in an open session, reviewed and amended the bill to increase punishment for acid attacks and support for resulting victims, which had been returned from the Guardian Council.
In November 2019, this law, after confirmation by the Guardian Council, was sent to the Ministry of Justice for implementation.
