Another Detainee from November 2019 Protests Sentenced to Prison

Abolfazl Nejadfath, a student activist and one of those detained during the November 2019 protests, has been sentenced to 6 years in prison by the Revolutionary Court.
The Telegram channel of the Student Trade Unions of the Country announced on Sunday, April 7, that this student union activist, who was previously arrested during the November protests, has been sentenced to a total of 6 years in prison by Branch 29 of the Revolutionary Court on charges of “assembly and conspiracy” and “propaganda against the system.”
This sentence was issued to Abolfazl Nejadfath at a time when, based on Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code regarding the aggregation of sentences, if this verdict is confirmed by the appeals court, 5 years of it will be enforceable on the charge of “assembly and conspiracy.”
Based on available information, this student activist was arrested by security forces on Thursday, November 21, and after some time was temporarily released on Wednesday, December 18, 2019, with a bail of 200 million tomans pending the completion of case proceedings.
This is not the first time the Islamic Republic has sentenced one of those detained during the November 2019 protests to prison; previously, Voice of America reported that six citizens from Urmia named Keyvan Pashaei, Ali Azizi, Amin Zare, Salar Taher Afshar, Elias Hosseinzadeh, and Yaseen Hasanpour, all of whom were arrested in these protests, were sentenced by the Revolutionary Court to a total of 48 months in prison.
The protests against the increase in gasoline prices began on Friday, November 15, in various Iranian cities including Mashhad, Khuzestan, Ahvaz, Khorramshahr, and Behbahan, and gradually spread to all regions of the country.
The United States says the Islamic Republic spends the country’s wealth on supporting terrorist groups and destabilizing the Middle East instead of the Iranian people. The United States has also repeatedly condemned institutional financial corruption and the plundering of Iran’s natural resources by regime affiliates, considering them among the main factors in Iran’s economic and financial problems.
