Iran Ranks Among Countries with Lowest Minimum Marriage Age for Girls

The secretary of a meeting reviewing the rationales of supporters and opponents of a plan to increase the minimum marriage age (child marriage) defined child marriage from the perspective of international law and referred to Iran’s current status and historical background regarding the minimum marriage age for girls and boys in various legislative periods, emphasizing the necessity of addressing this important issue under Iran’s current circumstances. He stated: Currently, Iran ranks second among countries in the world, after Guinea where the marriage age is 12 years old, with the lowest minimum marriage age for girls at 13 years, a situation that could generate negative reactions in the global community towards Iran.
