UNESCO Places Cities of Sanandaj and Bandar Abbas on World’s Creative Cities List

Sanandaj, the capital city of Kurdistan Province in Iran, is one of 66 cities selected by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) as “Creative Cities.”

Sanandaj has been recognized in the field of music as a city with innovative ideas.

The Kamkars family group is one of the most famous music groups from Sanandaj that has kept Kurdish local songs alive and brought them to the ears of a wide range of people.

This is while teaching the mother language is one of the important demands of Kurds in Iran.

From Iran, the city of Bandar Abbas has also been selected as a creative city in the field of handicrafts and folk art.

Ms. Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General, says: “Around the world, each of these cities has in turn placed culture not as a secondary factor, but as a pillar of its own strategy. This contributes to political and social innovation and is especially important for the younger generation.”
