Floods in Iran Have Affected the Lives of ‘At Least 12 Million Citizens’

According to the United Nations information portal, citing the European Commission, floods, river overflows, and problems resulting from heavy rainfall in recent weeks have affected the lives of at least 12 million citizens across Iran.

 

On Wednesday morning, the Iranian Red Crescent Organization announced that 11 provinces are currently facing problems caused by floods and waterlogging.

The death toll from the floods in Golestan Province in Iran has risen to at least 11 people, with one citizen drowning in the running waters caused by flooding near Bandar Turkmen.

12 Million People Affected by ‘Worst Disaster’ in Past 15 Years

According to a report published on ReliefWeb—the information portal affiliated with the United Nations—citing the European Commission, floods, river overflows, and problems resulting from rainfall in recent weeks have affected the lives of 12 million citizens.

The European Commission for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection stated that this event is the worst natural disaster that has occurred in Iran over the past 15 years, affecting two thousand cities and towns across 31 provinces.

The information portal of the “United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs” stated that two million citizens are in need of humanitarian assistance, and more than half a million people have been forced to leave their homes.

According to statements made by Iranian government officials, the floods of recent weeks have caused more than one billion dollars in damage to agricultural lands, infrastructure, and historical buildings.

Italy has also joined the group of countries that have sent humanitarian aid to Iran. According to the country’s Foreign Ministry, the aid includes 40 tons of essential items.

According to ReliefWeb, the European Commission has currently allocated 1.2 million euros in humanitarian financial assistance to Iran.

Austria, the Czech Republic, France, and Slovakia are other European countries that have offered assistance to Iran’s flood victims.

Death Toll in Golestan Province Rises

The death toll from the floods in Golestan Province has risen to at least 11 people, with the drowning of one citizen in the running waters caused by flooding near Bandar Turkmen.

On Wednesday morning, the 28th of Farvardin, the Iranian state news agency IRNA reported, citing Elias Hiyeh-chi, the governor of Bandar Turkmen, that the body of a citizen who recently lost his life has been found.

According to reports, this citizen fell into the flood water channel in one of the villages.

Iran’s Medical Examiner’s Organization had reported the death toll from flooding across Iran as 76 people by the 25th of Farvardin.

Areas of Golestan Province were among the critical crisis zones in the early days of Nowruz that spread to various cities and provinces throughout Iran in recent weeks.

On Wednesday morning, the Iranian Red Crescent Organization announced that 11 provinces are currently facing problems caused by floods and waterlogging: Ilam, South Khorasan, Razavi Khorasan, North Khorasan, Zanjan, Sistan and Baluchestan, Fars, Kerman, Golestan, Hormozgan, and Yazd.

According to the head of the Iranian Red Crescent Organization, the organization provided relief assistance to 14,102 people between the 24th and 27th of Farvardin.
