Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Company Workers’ Protest Rally Enters Third Day

A new round of protests and strikes by workers at Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Company continues.

Hundreds of workers from Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Company gathered on Sunday, August 5, on the third day of labor strikes and professional protests, in front of the company’s management office.

Workers at Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Company have faced the problem of delayed salaries and other professional issues for years, and in recent years have repeatedly held gatherings and strikes in protest against the postponement of their demands.

Following its privatization in 2015, Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Company has faced difficulties and has mostly paid workers’ salaries with delays. According to ILNA news agency, in the latest protests, workers announced that they are owed at least three months of salaries.

On Saturday and during the second day of these workers’ gatherings, they also demanded that ownership of the company be returned to the government.

Economic recession, bankruptcy of production units, and mismanagement have resulted in many workers being deprived of receiving wages and work benefits. So much so that over the past year, almost every day one or several protest gatherings have been held by workers.

Some reports indicate that more than six thousand labor gatherings have been held over the past year, mostly in protest of unpaid salaries for several months, mass layoffs, uncertainty following the transfer of factories to the private sector, and low wages.
