Trump’s Nowruz Message: America Stands with the Iranian People and Their Aspirations
Donald Trump, President of the United States, released a message on Monday on the occasion of the beginning of the new solar year, wishing a “beautiful and blessed Nowruz” to all those celebrating the arrival of spring.
The US President emphasized in this message that the United States stands alongside the Iranian people and their aspirations for connection with the wider world and for having a responsible and accountable government.
Donald Trump said at the beginning of this message: “The history of Nowruz is rooted in Iran, a place where a glorious nation has, for thousands of years, with the power of its culture and the resilience of its people, overcome great challenges. Today, the Iranian people face another challenge; rulers who serve themselves rather than serving them.”
The US President clarified: “Twenty-five centuries ago, Darius the Great asked God to protect Iran from three dangers; hostile armies, drought, and lies. Today, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps represents all three of these to the Iranian regime.”
He continued: “First, the Revolutionary Guards are not Iranian in name or in deed. It is a hostile force that oppresses the Iranian people and steals from them to support terrorism beyond its borders. Since 2012, the Revolutionary Guards have spent sixteen billion dollars of Iran’s wealth to support the Assad regime and terrorists in Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. Meanwhile, the average Iranian families are 15 percent poorer than a decade ago, and nearly 30 percent of Iranian youth are unemployed. Ordinary Iranians are under economic pressure, and celebrating occasions like Nowruz is difficult for them.”
Donald Trump added: “Second, the corruption and mismanagement of the Revolutionary Guards have intensified the effects of ongoing drought and created an environmental crisis. The reckless construction of dams by its companies, such as [Khatam al-Anbiya headquarters], has dried up rivers and lakes and helped create unprecedented dust storms that threaten the livelihoods and lives of Iranians.”
The US President further added: “Third, deception has become official policy of the government. The Revolutionary Guards use propaganda and censorship to hide the fact that the Iranian regime has plundered Iran’s wealth and mistreated its people. Iran’s rulers suppress their citizens’ rights to freedom of assembly, access to information, and equal opportunities to conceal the truth.”
Donald Trump says that despite repression, the Iranian people are struggling to reclaim their rights.
He added: “They await the spring of hope, and the United States stands with the Iranian people and their aspirations for connection with the wider world and for having a responsible and accountable government that truly serves the nation’s interests.”
Donald Trump emphasized: “For this reason, the U.S. Department of the Treasury will issue guidance this week that reaffirms America’s support for freedom of information flow to Iranian citizens. We also remain committed to holding the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps and the Iranian regime accountable for carrying out cyberattacks abroad and for suppressing Iranian citizens who protest against repression by their own government in Iran.”
The US President concluded this message by emphasizing: “On behalf of the American people, may light overcome darkness in the new year, and may the Iranian people soon enjoy times of peace, prosperity, and happiness.”
