Amnesty International issued a statement calling for the immediate transfer of Arash Sadeghi from Evin Prison to a specialized cancer treatment center.
Amnesty International announced on Thursday, July 5th, that “Arash Sadeghi, a human rights defender, has been diagnosed with a bone tumor that may be cancerous.”
According to Amnesty International’s report, despite medical recommendations for the immediate transfer of this prisoner to “Imam Khomeini Hospital” in Tehran, the responsible authorities have only agreed to his treatment at “Madaen Hospital” in Karaj.
Arash Sadeghi was arrested at his home in September 2014 along with his wife, Golrokh Iraee. The Revolutionary Court sentenced him to 19 years in prison on charges of “actions against national security, preparing human rights reports, and contacts with the Mujahedin-e Khalq organization and PJAK.”
Arash Sadeghi has described the charges leveled against him regarding contact with these groups as “file fabrication by the judiciary and the IRGC intelligence apparatus.” The prisoner was on hunger strike for dozens of days in protest of his wife’s detention.
Amnesty International now expresses severe concern about Arash Sadeghi’s condition, stating that he has a tumor in his elbow that may be cancerous.
The organization states that over the past 18 months, this prisoner has experienced chronic pain in his elbow and shoulder, and Evin prison’s healthcare has only prescribed him “anti-inflammatory drugs.”
According to Amnesty International’s statement, Arash Sadeghi learned from conversations between doctors that they suspect bone cancer.
Amnesty International adds that Arash Sadeghi was transferred outside the prison on June 13th to see a doctor, and on that day he was able to briefly review his medical file, which contained the doctors’ recommendation for his transfer to “Imam Khomeini Hospital.”
Amnesty International expressed concern that “Madaen Hospital” in Karaj may not have adequate equipment and expertise for diagnosing and treating cancer, and called for his transfer to a specialized cancer center.
