Maryam Karim Bigi, Sister of One of the 2009 Protest Victims, Expelled from University by ‘Phone Call’

Reports from Iran indicate that Maryam Karim Bigi, sister of Mostafa Karim Bigi who was killed during December 2009 protests, has been expelled from her university through a ‘phone call’ while enrolled in a master’s degree program in sociology.

According to several activists and Twitter users, including Atena Daemi, a former political prisoner and opponent of mandatory hijab, Maryam Karim Bigi’s expulsion from the university was due to ‘a file that was recently opened against her by the Ministry of Intelligence.’

Ms. Karim Bigi, a master’s degree student in sociology at Islamic Azad University, Tehran Science and Research Branch, had previously been threatened with expulsion from the university multiple times.

Security forces, in early March of last year, raided the home of Shahrnaz Akamali, Mostafa Karim Bigi’s mother, confiscated her and her daughter’s personal belongings, and warned that Maryam Karim Bigi must report to Evin Prosecutor’s Office within five days (on the eighth of March).

This grieving mother herself was previously tried on charges such as ‘propaganda against the system’ and spent time in prison.
