US Elections: Kamala Harris to be Joe Biden's Vice President

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has chosen Kamala Harris as his running mate after much anticipation and hesitation. Observers have called Biden's decision to choose a black woman a bold and courageous one.

Joe Biden, the Democratic presidential candidate for the United States, announced in a Twitter message that Democratic Senator Kamala Harris from California will be his running mate.

Joe Biden said in a Twitter message: "I am very proud to introduce Kamala Harris as my running mate. She is a fierce fighter for the common man and one of this country's finest servants."

Senator Kamala Harris, 55, is the first non-white American woman to run as a running mate for a major candidate in the US presidential election.

Kamala Harris ran in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, but dropped out of the race early.

Kamala Harris is a lawyer, former San Francisco District Attorney and California Attorney General. She is known as one of the most vocal voices in American society against inequality and racial discrimination.

Kamala Harris, whose mother is Indian and whose father is Jamaican, is the second black woman in American history to be elected to the Senate.

Joe Biden said in another tweet: "When Kamala was Attorney General, she worked with my son Beau. I was there with them fighting big banks and seeing them work to improve the lot of workers and protect women and children. I was proud then, and I am proud now, to choose her as my campaign partner."

Following the selection of Kamala Harris as the next potential vice president, he tweeted: "Joe Biden can unite the American people because he has dedicated his life to fighting for us. As president, he will build an America that aligns with our ideals."

Reactions to Kamala Harris' election

Susan Rice, one of Kamala Harris' rivals for Biden's vice president position and former national security advisor to Barack Obama, released a statement praising her former rival, supporting Joe Biden's decision, and wishing them victory.

Former US President Barack Obama also welcomed Joe Biden's decision in a statement, saying, "This is a good day for our country."

In contrast, the campaign of US President Donald Trump issued a statement calling Kamala Harris a "hypocrite" who has violated her past principles and has now joined the left wing of the Democratic Party.

The Democratic National Convention to formally nominate Joe Biden as the party's nominee and Kamala Harris as his running mate will be held next week, starting on August 17, for four days in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
