More than 9,000 girls aged 10 to 14 registered for marriage this summer

The report of the Statistical Center of Iran shows that in the summer of 2019, a total of 9,058 marriages of girls aged 10 to 14 were registered.
According to the organization's report on the "Social and Cultural Situation in Iran in the Summer of 2019," published on Monday, February 1, 188 divorces involving girls aged 10 to 14 were recorded during the same period.
Child marriage, especially of girls, has become a controversial issue in recent years.
In recent years, some female members of parliament have attempted to change the marriage age in Iranian law, but they have faced resistance from other members of parliament as well as clerics.
In this regard, the bill "Prohibiting Child Marriage" was rejected in the Judicial Committee of the Islamic Consultative Assembly in 2018.
According to Islamic law, the age of puberty for girls is 9 years old and for boys is 15 years old.
According to Masoumeh Ebtekar, Iran's Vice President for Women and Family Affairs, 30,000 marriages of girls under the age of 14 occur in the country annually.
